This film blowed my mind and got me in tears of happiness and sadness.I have been an immigrant 3 times, and this story touched me deeply. The first time, I moved from Venezuela to Spain without any legal documents and no work permit. I was 28 years old at the time. After a violent robbery in Venezuela, I went through a very deep internal process that made me decide to leave for a better life. During my trip I stuffed my money inside a secret pocket in my bra that a friend sew for me -so I wouldn’t have to bribe the military police at the airport if they found it- and nervously sweating, I passed the checking point and took my flight to Madrid with only one my passport and 2 pieces of luggage. After 21 years moving to 3 different countries and currently based in Australia with 4 nationalities under my belt, I can proudly say that my dream came true: I built a family with the best man ever and can offer my children a beautiful life filled with ethic, work, love and many nationalities. I just know that there are no barriers, no obstacles, no limitations when you want to make a dream come true if you want it deeply, if you keep focused and work without distractions towards your goal. And as the mother in the movie said; ‘God doesn’t make mistakes, give your all and let God do the rest’
I was watching the movie with my teen son that also plays basketball. At night all the family watched it again. I am so grateful that ‘RISE’ inspired me to do this painting about the main characters: Mum, Dad, 5 sons and Grandma. I sketched the painting at the same time I was watching the movie the second time.
